Just after swimming three weeks ago, this photo was made on the shores of Lake Michigan in downtown Chicago. It was during my inaugural visit to Illinois and I must say it was a pleasure indeed. My friend Sergey and I flew west to visit Donna for some conversation, exploration and durak - I’m already looking forward to the next visit.
By next Monday, I will have spent three nights in four states over the past fourteen days. It’s been a whirlwind and there is more to come. So here’s a quick hello as I take a pit stop in NYC and a few snapshots from my cell phone along the way. I wish I picked up a real camera instead of my phone for a few of these - c’est la vie. For those interested, I regularly post photos like these to my twitter account.
The Onion Features Editor, Joe Garden. The Globe Sunday Magazine (2010)
Amidst the general chaos of April/May I got a call to shoot Joe Garden, Features Editor of The Onion, for The Globe Sunday Magazine - how could I turn it down? It was a fairly hectic NYC shoot on Broadway (in Soho) but I think we ended up with a few nice images. Most importantly, I visited The Onion offices which was an experience in and of itself.
Since my last post I also had the pleasure of traveling in southwest Iceland for ten days, where I spent time exploring and making photos along the way. I shot medium format film for this project so you’ll have to be patient as I scan the work, one frame at a time. But in the interim, I can safely say that I am brimming with excitement and will share some photos here just as soon as they are ready!
This very morning marks the second anniversary of my first blog post and a redesign of the website which still stands today. I’ll admit to wading wearily into the blog world, but have since enjoyed every post more then the last. Largely due to the support of those who have commented and remained tuned in over the years! Though I understand this blog publishes less then others, I am proud that my content has remained 100% original and of my own authorship - which can be challenging at times.
So on this anniversary of sorts, I’d like to end by letting you conclude this post. What’s your reaction to the past couple years? What did you enjoy or wish you lived without? What would you like to see more of?
At long last, I’m happy to share a shoot I did with friend Zac Thomas in March. If you’re having deja-vu, you may recognize Zac as the guy on crutches a few posts ago. These images have been an itch in the back of my brain for a while now, it felt great to work through the take and finalize a few photos today. Though the images are straightforward I think their mood and construction is intriguing, hope you find them interesting as well.
To take us home, here’s an artist that was played for me this weekend by my friend Brice. Yasuko Agawa is an 80s funk and soul singer from Kamakura City, Japan.
Just because I need a little inspiration right now, here are some crossed out lists from my book last year. I’m amidst a barrage of work/projects these days and what I would do for a breath of fresh air. But the never ending clicks of my odometer and shutter can only lead to a bounty of new photography to share with you. I have been dreaming big for the website recently, so do check back soon for new work and possibly some new features.

Two weeks ago I made plans to shoot on a beach in Queens following a stint of beautiful weather in the city. But after scouting the location in strong winds and 40 degree weather, I decided we may want to put that idea in the back pocket. Last minute the shoot turned into a significantly warmer and relaxing day in the studio with Ashley, Misha and Laura from Click Models. Despite the weather and some technical hurdles along the way, I think we have a really slick collection of photos.
Before I go, a big shout out to my friend Zac (pictured below) who two days after knee surgery, crutched with me to the beach that chilly Saturday, still in his hospital scrubs - much respek Zac. Here are a few behind the scenes snaps…

At long last, here is the new editorial shot last month in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The team and I descended on an old brick warehouse used by furniture maker Jason Lambreth and shot new looks of 2010. It was an extremely frigged February day to be in a warehouse with no heat, but our model Katie took it all in stride. Our goal was to make a collection of photos that were stylistically different while remaining cohesive as a group, in the end I think the results are just fine.
I would also like to give a big shout out to the Norwegian painter Frank Brunner for letting us use his studio (and one of his paintings) during the shoot. Next up we head to the water for a new editorial this weekend. Keep your fingers crossed for good weather and stay tuned for many new projects! Here are a few behind the scenes snaps…
The past month has been a blur, sprinting through the days while trying to keep up with everything along the way. Though the days and nights have been filled to the brim with shoots, scanning, production and juggling 100 different projects, it’s been a rush.
So, to spare myself coalescing one of the new shoots for the blog prematurely, I am going to share something a little different. As some of you may know, I grew up playing the drums and have been in and out of a few bands over the years. Even though I always considered it a hobby, I now find myself playing in two bands in NYC with multiple shows a month. It’s quite a lot to keep up with but a lot of fun.
Last week, I went into the studio with one group, The Dennis Padula Band a R&B/Soul ensemble, to record a live demo. I just received this recordings this morning and thought I’d to share a song with you. Now, it’s just a rough demo so don’t be too harsh, but I have to say I think it came out pretty nice.
One fine day in August 2008 I was shooting street style for style.com in the Meatpacking District. My editor and I were trolling for stylish folks when we happened upon the young woman posing above. When we approached her she was shopping with her mom but took a moment to pose for a photo. After taking three frames I asked for her info and in a very serious tone she responded, I am Lady Gaga - a singer/songwriter. It took all my energy to not break into hysterics, needless to say I let out a laugh later that day.
Sure enough it only took a couple months until she started popping up everywhere. After recounting this story recently to a friend I decided to dig up the photos. It seems that I caught her in the early stages of transformation into the cyborg we know and love today.
